2.The argument for green growth under conditions in which empirical evidence is growing that its global spread is impossible seems to be politically motivated, using a defensive reasoning of the following kind: “it is not politically acceptable to question economic growth … no nation would voluntary limit growth in the name of the climate or environment; therefore green growth must be true, since the alternative is disaster” (as Wackernagel and Rees argue) “… ‘the politically acceptable is ecologically disastrous while the ecologically necessary is politically impossible’” (Hickel and Kallis 2019: 15).
